Welcome to CECOMEX.
The Background and Vision of CECOMEX
El Centro Comunitario Mexicano (Mexican Community Center), or as is popularly known, CECOMEX, is one of the oldest active grass roots, not-for-profit organizations of Mexicans in New York City. In contrast to other Mexican institutions that were established from a top-down perspective, because of the authoritarian culture that Mexico has experienced until recent years, CECOMEX was founded and it is run today by men and women who have gone through the experience of being immigrants themselves, and who understand the needs of their community, simply because the needs and goals of this recently-established community are an essential part of their own experience.
CECOMEX has focused its efforts on the Mexican population of El Barrio, an area that has, still today, an eclectic ethnic conformation, including Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, African Americans, and now Mexicans, as the new incoming population. The growing Mexican presence has transformed this area in various ways, giving it an ethnic air that you can’t find anywhere else in the city. There you can find the best Mexican food, music, products, and ideas about the future of U.S.-Mexico relations in the common space we all call New York City.
